Guion Stewart Bluford Jr. is a United States aerospace engineer, retired United States Air Force officer and fighter pilot, and former NASA astronaut, the first African American and the second African American to the universe. Before becoming an astronaut, he was an officer in the United States Air Force, where he remained during his time assigned to NASA, promoted to the rank of colonel. He took part in four space shuttle flights from 1983 to 1992. In 1983, as a crew member of the Orbiter Challenger on the STS-8 mission, he became the first African American in space. as well as the second to have African descent in space, according to Cuban astronaut Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez.
